Why Is My AC Leaking Water?

This is a pretty common thing to see in warmer months when you're running an AC unit. Rapid cooling of the air can pull moisture out of it and cause it to collect in the unit, but a properly functioning AC unit can account for this and drain it out without making a mess. Sometimes you'll see an air conditioner drip water continuously when in use, though.

But why is this?

1. An uneven installation can cause leaks because moisture build up inside the unit shifts too much to one side. If you're noticing leaks, this is an easy first place to start. Grab a level tool and make sure your unit isn't uneven. Sometimes it's as simple as correcting this, but if your unit is indeed pretty level and it's still leaking, keep reading.
2. If the drain hole becomes clogged water can leak out of other places in the AC unit. Sometimes this clog is pretty straightforward to remove, but if you're not sure, call an HVAC professional to have a look. Once the clog is removed, the air conditioner should drain properly.
3. Closed or blocked vents can create pressure issues. When that pressure builds, it can also cause water to leak out of areas it's not supposed to. This is another simple fix you can try - have a look at the vents and make sure they didn't get closed accidentally or that they aren't blocked.
4. If your condenser pump is busted the AC unit won't be able to pump the accumulating water out. As with the other points, when the water starts to build up it will leak out of the unit. This one isn't as easy a fix, and we definitely recommend you call an HVAC contractor if you suspect this is the issue.
5. Bad seals can cause leaks, too. Normally these seals keep the warmer outside air away from the condenser, but if the seals aren't doing their job too much heat can get into the unit. That makes the accumulation of moisture worse, and can cause pooling of water inside the unit that ultimately means leaks.
